Noah loves Julie!
Introducing The Boy to an eighties classic!
My friend Julie and I are sitting at the dining room table. Shasta just brought a mouthful of food from the kitchen- Four yards away!!! He’s beautiful, but neurotic!
I really, really do not like this passage from the Bible. I don’t see any way around the fact that Jesus is rude to this woman for no good reason.
Jesus isn’t supposed to be rude.
Jesus is supposed to be “nice” — well, that’s what Christians usually tell ourselves, at least. And when Jesus isn’t nice, He is supposed to be right, i.e. pointing out someone’s hypocrisy or teaching the Pharisees a lesson.
Jesus’ initial reaction to the woman in this story is rude and wrong.
But this woman forces Jesus to look at His own prejudices. “What?!?” you cry, “God can’t be prejudiced!!!!!” Maybe not, but Christians believe Jesus was fully human, and in the time and place He grew up, He would have been taught to dislike Canaanites. We don’t have any stories explaining why Jesus would react this way to a Canaanite woman — and we have plenty of other stories where Jesus interacts with women, so it wasn’t her gender that bothered Him.
So if Jesus had no personal reason to be rude to this woman, but was rude to her anyway, isn’t that prejudice?

Another compelling sermon by my hubby based on Matthew 15: 21-28. Could how Jesus was raised prejudiced him toward the Canaanite woman and the weeks leading up to their meeting caused his rudeness?
